unemployed in GermanyThe number of unemployed people in Germany has increased by 26,000 in August, reaching 2.35 million, according to Federal Employment Agency figures. This is an increase of 0.1 percentage points over the previous month and so unemployment in Germany amounted to 5.2%.

Compared to the same month last year, the number of Germans without work decreased by about 194,000.

“The slightly higher unemployment rate in August can be attributed to the usual seasonal factors”, said the Head of Federal Employment Agency in Germany, Detlef Scheele. “The number of jobseekers has declined according to the seasonal factors”, added he.

He noted that the jobless count typically increased in August as students graduated and registered as job seekers, while many companies held off hiring new staff until after the summer holidays.

Scheele also pointed out that underemployment affected 3.2 million people in August, 18,000 fewer than in the previous month. While more people couldn’t find a suitable job, the number of vacancies registered with the Nuremberg-based employment office rose to 828,000 in August, marking an increase of 62,000 vacancies year on year.
